In this world there are a lot of singular problems which seem very distinct and seperate from each other, but in fact share the same root causes. The patterns of failure and desperation are very similar in almost all contexts, so many issues could possibly be approached with the same basic tactics of problem minimization.
Nevertheless, abstract ideas are practically useless until applied to the very concrete challenges people are facing. This page is to collect specific solutions for specific problems. Remember to wipe your brain's slate clean.
climate change / global warming
- causes:
- emission of climate-effecting gases (CO2, CH4, ..) through fossil fuel usage and intensive animal farming
- reduction of carbon binding organic resevoirs f.e. by massive logging of rainforests
- countermeasures:
- reforestation
- reduction of energy consumption (discarding stand-by functions, energy-saving lamps, heat insulation, ...)
- replacing CO2-emitting with renewable means of making energy available:
- fuel from biomass
- solar energy
- hydrodynamic / tidal power
- nuclear fusion
- ...
- remove greenhouse gases from atmosphere (precipitation f.e. with micro organisms like algae or technical processes)
- dealing with the consequences:
- sea-level raising
- relocate affected people
- reinforce coastal protection measures to protect land from sea-level rise
- make structures (houses, factories..) float on water
- sea-level raising
social isolation
...
desertification
...
drug addiction
...
lack of basic infrastructure in wide parts of the world
...
child misuse
...
..lot more

As of 3/28 You've only fleshed out one problem, and have mis-stated the cause and listed non-sequiturs as solutions. Listen:
The only important cause of global warming is a change of carbon balance. Several hundred million of years ago the earth was covered in trees rich in high-carbon lignin. At that time, the earth was much hotter, but no microbes had yet evolved that could digest it. As the tree skeletons were buried, carbon was taken out of the life cycle and sequestered deep underground, where it was out of reach of lignin-phile microbes that later evolved. Since there was a complete carbon balance, global temperature was fairly stable. The tree skeletons became Coal. Petrol formed in a similar way.
A solution to our problem can NOT be found in simply planting more trees, as those trees will die, and their carbon will return to the atmosphere. Presenting ideas like planting more trees, using hydro power, using less energy as solutions – Well, say you encountered an imbecile who swam out to sea, and emotes wanting to be back on land.
“Tread water! Stay there! Don't swim farther from shore!”
These are all nice things to say if a third party is capable of saving him, but only moving toward shore is a solution. The only solution is finding how to remove carbon from the cycle – fast – and most importantly make sure it doesn't get back in.
This is a very difficult problem.

still preheating.
This is just a placeholder / preview item until work on the backend drupal modules has progressed to a more usable state. You are not the only one impatiently looking forward to that :)
Well more trees certainly wont do any harm, but you are right in that the solution is to remove the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which needs huge amounts of ‘spare’ energy. That issue could already be solved, if only a fraction of annual ~1000 billion $/€ armament expenses would go into funding fusion energy research (arguably the most important and pressing future challenge for the human race). But regrettably mankind has not started another Manhattan-Project-style effort; instead the ITER project for building an experimental fusion reactor in the next ten years was downsized severely – the budget is now only 7.6 billion dollars (for 30 years!), whilst the cost of the Iraq war is estimated at 12 bn $ per month – go figure. The problem really isn't that big – it is just that we as a collective are that stupid…
(In the end, if our (more or less) democratically elected governments are unable to realize basic causal relationships and react accordingly – this will probably be another low-hanging fruit for cleverer people to pick – Meet Google Fusion Power Inc. or something…)
I think global warming is
I think global warming is one of those hot button issues that is certainly going to heat up (sorry for the pun) in the coming years. As a whole, the entire energy crisis is something that is not going away. I think one good aspect of higher energy costs, most notibly the $4 a gallon gas is that it pushed and fuels (another bad pun) future clean technolgies much faster. This future sources of energy will cut costs and help the environment at the same time.
cool
thanks
The Gray!
Eliminate gray areas when it comes to matters of morality. Thus we will leave no room for the criminally minded to use the law as a means to advance his corrupt ideology.
Good List and Suggestions
Some good suggestions in here. I guess like many things it all comes down to government funding and major shifting from large corporations in how they run their businesses.
This is true. But I think we
This is true. But I think we should not forget about the moral side in dealing with this issue.
Great Thoughts
I love your thoughts and agree 100%. Thanks for posting. Now if only the rest of the world would realize this…
Still some way to go
How about adding world hunger & food shortages to your list?
Re: Issues & Solutions
good idea
“fuel from biomass” will
“fuel from biomass” will make add to “world hunger & food shortages” if it means plant matter is grown for use as biofuel…
Re: Issues & Solutions
You are right about the root causes! It's similar to our human health! All sickness are the results of one thing: TOXINS! From diabetes to panic attacks that are uncontrollable, they are the results of toxins from the food that we eat, the water that we drink and the air that we breathe and to eliminate them, we find new ways and more new ways! I hope many people will read this very informative blog of yours and I thank you for sharing it!

Climate change isn't going to wait for the financial crisis to get resolved. We need to step up and increase our efforts to help on adaptation, not slow it down.
